چکیده

This semester project investigates strategies aimed at controlling the aggregate power demand of large groups of domestic electric water heaters. An existing model of a single electric water heater that considers thermal stratification along the height of the hot water tank was tuned and verified using experimental data. The tuned model was then incorporated into an existing model of a water heater population and combined with an existing model representation of typical water draws. This framework was then used as a test-bench for a number of different control strategies. Simulations were carried out on populations of 500 water heaters with heterogeneous parameters. The developed control strategies differ with regard to the assumed amount of information feedback and the assumed capability of the controller with respect to interacting with the internal duty cycle of individual water heaters. It was found that the best overall performance was achieved by an external controller that receives direct temperature information from the location of the device’s internal thermostat and has full control over the heating element’s ON/OFF state. Controllers that are only capable of blocking ON signals provide a similar performance unless the target power profile significantly exceeds the autonomous (uncontrolled) demand for long periods of time. It was also found that external controllers that only receive feedback in the event of temperature limit violations can provide an alternative to controllers that receive constant periodic temperature information, albeit with small sacrifices in terms of control quality and end-user comfort.

Different Electric Vehicle Charging Strategies to avoid Reducing the Insulation Oil Lifetime of Distribution Transformers

Abstract: The widespread presence of uncontrolled electric vehicles causes overloading of distribution network equipment. One of these equipments is distribution transformer, which should pay attention to overloading and reducing lifetime of this equipment due to charging of electric vehicles. First, strategies have been proposed to investigate the effect of electric vehicle penetration level a...

An Efficient Water Flow Control Approach for Water Heaters in Direct Load Control

Tank water heaters (WHs) are present in a prevailing number of European households. Serving as energy buffers WHs have come under the spotlight of various direct load control (DLC) programs over the last few decades. Although DLC has proven to be an efficient measure towards daily peak demand shaving, the payback effect might lead to a new peak in the grid. This payback phenomenon takes place e...

An assessment of efficient water heating options for an all-electric single family residence in a mixed-humid climate

An evaluation of a variety of efficient water heating strategies for an all-electric single family home located in a mixed-humid climate is conducted using numerical modeling. The strategies considered include various combinations of solar thermal, heat pump, and electric resistance water heaters. The numerical model used in the study is first validated against a year of field data obtained on ...

Using Electric Water Heaters (EWHs) for Power Balancing and Frequency Control in PV-Diesel Hybrid Mini-Grids

Electricity is usually supplied by diesel generators in remote communities at costs that can reach up to $1.50 per kWh in northern Canada. At these costs, several renewable energy sources (RESs) such as wind and photovoltaic (PV) can be cost effective to meet part of the energy needs. Their main drawback, being fluctuating and intermittent, can be compensated with either storage units, which ar...

Influence of Tube Arrangement on the Thermal Performance of Indirect Water Bath Heaters

Natural convection heat transfer from a tube bundle in the indirect water bath heaters is investigated. A computer-code is used for the solution of the governing equations of mass, momentum and energy transfer based on the SIMPLE-C algorithm. Simulations are carried out for the gas pressure station heater of Kermanshah city with various tube bundle arrangements. In order to validate the numeric...
